Florida 1st Grade Math: What Students Learn
Florida 1st grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that students will build on throughout elementary school. Aligned to the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards for Mathematics, the 1st grade curriculum moves from basic counting to two-digit number operations, measurement, geometry, and data collection.
Numbers and Counting
Students start by counting forward and backward within 120, skip counting by 2s to 20 and by 5s to 100. They read and write numbers in standard, expanded, and word form up to 100, and learn to compose and decompose two-digit numbers using tens and ones. Plotting, ordering, and comparing whole numbers up to 100 is also a key skill at this level.
Addition and Subtraction
A major focus of 1st grade math is building fluency with addition and subtraction. Students recall addition facts with sums to 10 and related subtraction facts, add two whole numbers with sums to 20, and begin exploring two-digit addition and subtraction. They also apply properties of addition to find sums of three or more numbers and solve real-world problems using objects, drawings, or equations.
- Recall addition and subtraction facts with automaticity
- Add two-digit and one-digit numbers with sums to 100
- Restate subtraction problems as missing addend problems
- Determine if addition and subtraction equations are true or false
- Find the unknown in an addition or subtraction equation
Measurement and Time
Students estimate the length of objects to the nearest inch and compare the lengths of up to three objects. They tell and write time to the nearest hour and half hour using both analog and digital clocks.
Money
1st graders identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters, express their values using the ¢ symbol, and find the value of combinations of coins up to one dollar.
Geometry
Students identify and compare solid figures including spheres, cubes, cylinders, cones, and rectangular prisms. They sketch two-dimensional figures, build three-dimensional figures, and compose and decompose two- and three-dimensional shapes. They also partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal-sized parts.
Data
Students collect data into categories and represent results using tally marks or pictographs. They also practice interpreting data shown in tally marks and pictographs to answer questions.
