Delaware 1st Grade Math: What Students Learn

Delaware 1st grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that students will build on for years to come. Aligned to the Delaware Math Content Standards, the curriculum moves from basic counting into real addition and subtraction problem-solving, early place value, measurement concepts, time, and geometry.

Addition and Subtraction Within 20

A major focus of 1st grade math is mastering addition and subtraction within 20. Students learn to solve word problems, add three whole numbers, apply properties of operations, and understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. By the end of 1st grade, students should demonstrate fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

  • Solving word problems using addition and subtraction within 20
  • Adding three whole numbers with sums up to 20
  • Understanding subtraction as an unknown-addend problem
  • Relating counting to addition and subtraction
  • Determining unknown numbers in addition and subtraction equations

Place Value and Two-Digit Numbers

Students begin understanding that two-digit numbers are made of tens and ones. They count to 120, compare two-digit numbers using >, =, and < symbols, add within 100, and mentally find 10 more or 10 less than any two-digit number.

  • Counting to 120 starting at any number
  • Understanding tens and ones in two-digit numbers
  • Comparing two-digit numbers with >, =, and <
  • Adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number
  • Subtracting multiples of 10 from multiples of 10

Measurement and Data

1st graders begin measuring length, ordering objects by size, and organizing data. They tell and write time in hours and half-hours using both analog and digital clocks, and interpret simple data charts with up to three categories.

Geometry

Students explore two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, learn to identify defining attributes, compose shapes to make new shapes, and partition circles and rectangles into equal shares — laying the groundwork for fractions in later grades.
