Delaware Kindergarten Math: What Students Learn

Kindergarten is where students build the foundation for all future math. Delaware's Kindergarten math curriculum, aligned to the Delaware Math Content Standards, covers five key areas: counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, number sense in base ten, measurement, and geometry.

Counting and Cardinality

Students learn to count to 100 by ones and by tens, count forward from any given number, and write numerals from 0 to 20. They connect counting to cardinality — understanding that the last number said when counting a group tells how many objects are in that group. Students also compare groups of objects and written numerals to determine which is greater, less than, or equal.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Kindergarteners represent addition and subtraction using objects, fingers, drawings, and equations. They solve word problems with sums and differences within 10, decompose numbers into pairs, find the number that makes 10 when added to a given number, and fluently add and subtract within 5.

Numbers in Base Ten

Students compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, building early place value understanding that prepares them for Grade 1 math.

Measurement and Data

Students describe measurable attributes of objects such as length and weight, directly compare two objects using a shared attribute, and classify objects into categories by sorting and counting.

Geometry

Students identify, name, and describe two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes in their environment. They analyze shapes for similarities and differences, model real-world shapes by building and drawing them, and compose simple shapes to form larger shapes.

How StudyPug Supports Delaware Kindergarten Math

StudyPug's video lessons walk through each of these topics step by step. Every lesson is short enough to hold a young learner's attention, and practice problems reinforce what was just taught. Parents can monitor progress, and students can replay any lesson as many times as they need. All content is aligned to the Delaware Math Content Standards so there are no surprises — your child learns exactly what their teacher is covering in class.
