5th Grade Math Topics in California
California 5th grade math covers a wide range of topics that build the foundation for middle school mathematics. Students work through numerical expressions, place value, decimals, fractions, measurement, volume, coordinate geometry, and two-dimensional figures — all aligned to the California Common Core State Standards.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Students learn to use parentheses, brackets, and braces in numerical expressions. They write and interpret simple expressions and generate two numerical patterns using given rules. These skills build the logical thinking needed for pre-algebra.
Number and Operations in Base Ten
5th graders explore place value in multi-digit numbers and explain patterns when multiplying or dividing by powers of 10. They read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths, round decimals to any place, fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers, and find whole-number quotients. Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals to hundredths is also covered.
Number and Operations — Fractions
This is a major focus in 5th grade. Students add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, solve word problems involving fractions, interpret fractions as division, and extend their understanding of multiplication and division to include fractions and mixed numbers. Scaling (resizing) through multiplication is also introduced.
Measurement and Data
Students convert measurement units within the same system and create line plots to display data sets measured in fractions of a unit. Volume is introduced as an attribute of solid figures, with students measuring volume by counting unit cubes and relating volume to multiplication and addition.
Geometry
5th graders use perpendicular number lines to define a coordinate system and graph points to represent real-world problems. They also classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on their properties and understand how attributes of categories apply to all subcategories.
