2nd Grade Math Topics in California

California 2nd grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students work with addition and subtraction up to 100 and 1000, build understanding of place value with three-digit numbers, and practice skip-counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s. These skills form the building blocks for multiplication and division in later grades.

Addition and Subtraction

Second graders in California are expected to fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies, and solve one- and two-step word problems using addition and subtraction within 100. Students also learn to add up to four two-digit numbers and add and subtract within 1000 using place value strategies.

Place Value and Number Sense

Understanding place value is a major focus in 2nd grade. Students learn that a three-digit number represents hundreds, tens, and ones. They read and write numbers to 1000 in standard form, word form, and expanded form, and compare three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to symbols.

Measurement and Data

California 2nd graders measure lengths using rulers, yardsticks, and meter sticks, and estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They solve word problems involving lengths and represent whole numbers on number line diagrams. Students also generate and represent data using picture graphs and bar graphs.

Time and Money

Students tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m. They also solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies — practical skills that connect math to everyday life.

Geometry

In geometry, 2nd graders recognize and draw shapes with specific attributes such as a given number of angles or equal faces. They partition rectangles into rows and columns of equal squares and partition circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and quarters.
