Calm, Breezy, or Windy? You Can Describe the Wind!

You will learn about wind and the words calm, breezy, and windy to describe how much wind you feel outside.

What Is Wind?

Wind is moving air. You cannot see wind, but you can feel it! You can also see what wind does to things around you.

Wind can be strong or gentle. Sometimes there is no wind at all! You use special words to describe how much wind there is.

When the air is still and nothing moves, we call it calm. On a calm day, there is no wind blowing.

You can tell it is calm when flags hang straight down. Leaves do not move. Ribbons hang still. Bubbles float straight down to the ground. Paper airplanes do not fly well on calm days!

When a little wind blows softly, we call it breezy. A breeze is gentle. It is not too strong and not too weak.

On a breezy day, you might feel a light wind on your face. Flags move just a little. A pinwheel spins slowly. Dandelion seeds float slowly through the air. Bubbles float sideways in a breeze. A paper boat moves slowly across water. Kites fly gently in a breezy wind!

When a lot of strong wind blows, we call it windy. Windy means the air moves fast and with force.

On a windy day, trees sway back and forth. Leaves swirl up in the air. Feathers fly away quickly. A pinwheel spins very fast and makes noise. A windmill spins fast too. You might need to hold your hat on a windy day! A balloon can pull hard on your arm when it is windy.

Wind: Wind is moving air. You can feel wind on your skin and see it move things like leaves and flags.

Calm: Calm means there is no wind at all. On a calm day, everything is still and nothing moves because of wind.

Breezy: Breezy means there is a gentle, light wind blowing. A breeze is not too strong. It feels nice on a warm day!

Windy: Windy means there is a lot of strong wind blowing. Windy wind moves big things and blows with force.

Breeze: A breeze is another word for gentle wind. A breeze can make a kite fly or a pinwheel spin slowly.

You can watch for wind all around you! Look at a flag outside. Is it still? That is calm. Is it moving a little? That is breezy. Is it blowing hard? That is windy!

Try holding a pinwheel outside. If it spins slowly, the wind is breezy. If it spins very fast, the wind is windy. If it does not spin at all, it is calm!

You can also blow bubbles outside. Watch where they go. On a calm day, bubbles float down. On a breezy day, bubbles float sideways. On a windy day, bubbles pop fast!

You already know about weather and how it changes. You know that weather can be sunny, cloudy, or rainy. Now you are adding wind words to what you know about weather!

Learning about wind helps you describe the weather outside every day. You can look outside and say, "It is calm today!" or "It is windy today!"

Wind is one part of weather. When you learn about wind, you are learning about the world around you. You can use the words calm, breezy, and windy every day when you talk about the weather outside.

As you keep learning about weather, you will discover more amazing things about the sky, clouds, rain, and sunshine. Wind is just one exciting part of weather that you can observe and describe!
