Hot, Cold, Warm, and Cool: You Can Feel Temperature!
You will learn about temperature and the words hot, cold, cool, and warm to describe how things feel in different weather.
Hot and Cold
Hot means something has a very high temperature. The sun feels hot. A metal slide in summer feels very hot!

Cold means something has a very low temperature. Snow feels cold. Ice cream feels cold in your mouth. When it snows outside, you need a warm coat!
When it is very cold, you wear mittens to keep your hands warm. Mittens trap your body heat so your hands stay cozy. When you touch snow to make a snowball, your hands feel cold!
Warm and Cool
Warm is not as hot as hot, but warmer than cool. A blanket feels warm when you wrap up in it. Hot chocolate feels warm in your hands on a cold day!
Cool is not as cold as cold, but cooler than warm. A breeze on a fall day feels cool on your skin. Spring puddles feel cool when you splash in them!
Temperature and Weather
Temperature changes with the weather and seasons. In winter, the temperature is cold. Snow falls when it is very cold outside!
When the weather gets warm, snow melts and turns into water. That is why snowmen disappear in spring! In summer, the temperature is hot. Ice cubes and popsicles melt fast on hot days.
Plants need water when it is hot outside. Hot weather makes plants thirsty, just like you get thirsty on a hot day!
Dressing for the Temperature
You wear different clothes for different temperatures. When it is cold, you wear a winter coat, mittens, and gloves. These keep your body warm!
When it is hot, you wear light clothes. When it is cool, a sweater helps keep you warm and cozy. You always dress for the temperature outside!
