What Do Animals Need to Live? Food, Water, Shelter, and Space!

You will learn what animals need in their habitat to stay alive and healthy, including food, water, shelter, and space.

What Is a Habitat?

A habitat is where an animal lives. It is a special place that gives animals everything they need to stay alive. Animals need food, water, shelter, and space in their habitat.

You can find many animals living in habitats all around you. Birds live in trees. Fish live in water. Bears live in forests.

Food Gives Animals Energy

All living things need food to survive. Food gives animals energy to move, play, and grow. Without food, animals cannot stay alive.

Different animals eat different foods. Tigers eat meat. Butterflies drink nectar from flowers. Bears eat fish and berries. Baby bears need food to grow big and strong.

Water Keeps Animals Healthy

All living things need water to survive. Water helps animals' bodies work the right way. Without water, animals cannot live.

Rabbits drink water every day. Bears drink water from streams. Even lizards in hot deserts need water to stay healthy.

Shelter Keeps Animals Safe

Shelter is a place where animals stay safe. It protects animals from cold, rain, and predators. Predators are animals that hunt other animals.

Birds make nests as their shelter. Nests keep baby birds safe and warm. Deer hide under pine trees to stay warm in winter. Baby elephants need shelter to stay safe too.

Space to Move and Live

Animals need space in their habitat. Space lets animals move around and find food. Just like you need room to play, animals need room to live.

Without enough space, animals cannot be healthy. Space is one of the most important basic needs for all animals.

Air Helps Animals Breathe

All animals need fresh air to breathe. Rabbits, turtles, and all living things need air to stay alive. Without air, animals cannot survive.

Plants Need Light to Grow

Plants are living things too. Plants need light to make their own food. This is called photosynthesis. Without light, plants become weak and cannot grow.
