What Are Simple Machines?
Simple machines are tools that help you do work more easily. They help you push, pull, or lift heavy things with less effort. You can find simple machines all around you at the playground, in the kitchen, and at home!
You already know about push and pull forces and how they make things move. Simple machines use these same forces to help you do harder jobs. When you use a simple machine, you need less force to move something heavy.

The Six Simple Machines You Will Learn
Ramp (Inclined Plane)
A ramp is a flat surface that is slanted. You can push a heavy box up a ramp instead of lifting it straight up. This makes the work much easier for you! A playground slide is a ramp you use every day.
Lever
A lever is a bar that moves around a fixed point called a fulcrum. When you push down on one end, the other end goes up. A seesaw is a lever! You can use a lever to lift heavy things with less effort.
Pulley
A pulley has a wheel and a rope. When you pull down on the rope, the pulley helps lift something up. Pulleys change the direction of your force, making heavy things feel lighter to lift.
Wheel and Axle
Wheels are round and they roll. When you put heavy things on wheels, they move much more easily. Wheels reduce friction, which means less rubbing between surfaces. Toy wagons, shopping carts, and bicycles all use wheels!
Wedge
A wedge has a sharp or pointed edge. It pushes into things to split them apart. Scissors, knives, and even your front teeth are wedges! When you cut paper with scissors, you are using a wedge.
Screw (Wheel and Axle)
A screwdriver is a wheel and axle simple machine. The handle helps you turn with less effort. You can use it to tighten bolts and fix things like bicycles.

You use simple machines every day without even knowing it! When you go down a slide, you use an inclined plane. When you play on a seesaw, you use a lever. When you ride in a wagon, you use wheels.
You can also use everyday technology that uses simple machines, like scissors in the kitchen or a screwdriver in the garage. Simple machines are everywhere around you!
