Master End Punctuation Marks and Write Better Sentences!

You will learn to recognize and identify the three main punctuation marks that go at the end of sentences: periods, question marks, and exclamation points.

Introduction

You will learn to recognize the special marks that go at the end of sentences! These marks are called end punctuation, and they help you know when sentences are finished. Every sentence needs one of these marks at the end.

What Are End Punctuation Marks?

End punctuation marks are special symbols you put at the end of sentences. There are three main marks you need to know: the period (.), the question mark (?), and the exclamation point (!).

These marks help you read better. They tell you when to stop and when sentences are done. You can think of them like stop signs for your sentences!

Key Terms & Definitions

Period (.): A small round dot you put at the end of telling sentences. It looks like a tiny circle and means "stop here."

Question Mark (?): A curvy mark with a dot that you use when asking something. It looks like a hook and shows you want an answer.

Exclamation Point (!): A straight line with a dot that shows excitement or strong feelings. It looks like a stick with a dot underneath.

End Punctuation: The special marks you put at the end of sentences to show they are finished.

Sentence: A group of words that tells a complete thought and always ends with punctuation.

When to Use Each Mark

You use a period when you tell someone something. Like "I have a dog." or "The bird is blue." These are called telling sentences.

You use a question mark when you ask something. Like "What is your name?" or "Where is my book?" These are called asking sentences.

You use an exclamation point when you feel excited or surprised. Like "I love ice cream!" or "Look at that rainbow!" These show strong feelings.

Practice Activities

You can practice by reading sentences and looking for the marks at the end. Try reading books and pointing to each punctuation mark you see.

When you write, remember to put one of these marks at the end of every sentence. Ask yourself: Am I telling, asking, or showing excitement?
