Master the Building Blocks of Every Story
You will learn to identify the three main parts of every story: characters, setting, and plot. These story elements help you understand what happens in the stories you read.
Introduction
You will discover the main parts that make every story special and complete. Every story you read has three important elements that work together: characters, setting, and plot. When you learn to find these parts, you become a better reader and can understand stories more easily.
What Are Story Elements?
Story elements are the main parts that every story needs. You can think of them like puzzle pieces that fit together. When you put all the pieces together, you get a complete story that makes sense.
The three main story elements are characters, setting, and plot. You will find these parts in every story you read, from picture books to chapter books.
Characters - The People in Stories
Characters are the people or animals who do things in the story. They are the ones you read about and follow through the adventure. Characters can be brave like a superhero or funny like a silly monkey.
When you read a story, ask yourself: Who is this story about? The answer will help you find the main characters. Some stories have one main character, while others have several characters working together.
Setting - Where and When Stories Happen
The setting tells you where and when the story takes place. It could be at a school, in a forest, by the ocean, or even in space. The setting helps you picture the story in your mind.
You can find the setting by looking for clues about places and times. Words like "at the park," "in the morning," or "long ago" help you understand the setting.
Plot - What Happens in the Story
The plot is what happens in the story from beginning to end. It includes all the events and adventures that the characters experience. Every plot has a problem that needs to be solved.
Stories have three main parts: beginning, middle, and end. The beginning introduces the characters and setting. The middle shows the problem or adventure. The end tells how everything works out.
