Master Following Spoken Instructions - Listen and Follow Directions
You will learn to listen carefully to spoken directions and follow them in the correct order, helping you succeed in classroom activities and daily tasks.
Introduction
You will learn how to listen carefully to spoken instructions and follow them step by step. Following directions helps you complete tasks correctly and succeed in your classroom activities. When you listen well and follow instructions in order, you can do amazing things like art projects, games, and learning activities.
What Are Spoken Instructions?
Spoken instructions are directions that someone tells you with their voice. Your teacher might say "Stand up and clap your hands twice." These are spoken instructions because you hear them, not read them.
Instructions have steps that you need to do in order. The first step comes first, then the second step comes next. Following the right order helps you do things correctly.
How to Listen to Instructions
When someone gives you instructions, you need to listen with your ears and your brain. Look at the person talking to you. Keep your body still and quiet so you can hear every word.
Sometimes instructions have two steps, like "Pick up your pencil and write your name." Sometimes they have more steps. Count the steps in your head: first, second, third.
Following Instructions Step by Step
After you hear the instructions, do the first step first. Then do the second step. If someone says "Clap your hands and then sit down," you clap first, then sit down.
If you forget a step, you can ask questions to get help. Asking questions shows you want to do things right. This connects to Asking Questions To Seek Help when you need to understand better.
Key Terms & Definitions
Instructions: Directions that tell you what to do, like "Stand up" or "Clap your hands."
First Step: The very first thing you need to do when following directions.
Second Step: The next thing you do after the first step is finished.
Order: The way things come one after another, like first, then second, then third.
Listen: Using your ears to hear and understand what someone is saying to you.
Follow: To do what the instructions tell you to do.
Practice Activities
You can practice following instructions with simple games. Try "Simon Says" where you only follow directions that start with "Simon says." This helps you listen carefully to every word.
Practice with two-step directions like "Touch your nose and then wave." Remember to do the first step before the second step. This skill helps you with Following Discussion Rules in group activities.
