Become a Word Detective with Context Clues
You will master using context clues to understand unknown words while reading, helping you become a more confident and independent reader.
Introduction
You will discover how to use context clues while reading to understand words you don't know yet. Context clues are helpful hints found in the words and sentences around an unknown word. When you learn to use these clues, you become a stronger and more confident reader who can figure out new vocabulary on your own.
This skill connects to your previous learning about Using Context For Word Recognition and Finding Word Meanings Through Context. You will build on these foundation skills to become even better at understanding new words.
What Are Context Clues?
Context clues are like detective hints that help you solve word mysteries. When you see a word you don't know, you can look at the other words around it to figure out what it means. These clues might be in the same sentence or in nearby sentences.
For example, if you read "The enormous whale swam slowly," the words "whale" and "swam slowly" give you clues that "enormous" means very big. You can use your knowledge from Identifying Common Root Words and Decoding Words Using Affixes to help you understand word parts too.
Types of Context Clues You Can Use
You can find several different types of clues when you read. Picture clues show you what's happening in the story through illustrations. Word parts like prefixes and suffixes give you hints about meaning. Surrounding sentences provide more information about what's happening in the story.
When you make a guess about a word's meaning, you should check your meaning by reading the sentence again. This helps you make sure your guess makes the story make sense. These skills prepare you for more advanced topics like Finding Word Meanings In Text and Decoding Unknown Words Using Sentence Clues.

How to Use Context Clues

Think about what would make sense in that spot in the story. Use what you know about Morphological Knowledge Word Meanings to break the word into parts. Then make your best guess and read the sentence again to check if it sounds right.
