Master Spelling Patterns and Word Families

You will learn to spell words that follow common patterns by recognizing how words with the same endings look and sound alike.

Introduction

You will discover how spelling patterns make reading and writing easier! When you learn that words like "cat," "bat," and "hat" all end the same way, you can spell many new words. These word families help you become a better reader and writer.

What Are Spelling Patterns?

Spelling patterns are groups of letters that appear at the end of words. You will find that words with the same pattern sound alike and rhyme. When you see "-at" at the end of words, you know they will sound similar.

You can use these patterns to spell new words. If you know how to spell "cat," you can easily spell "bat," "hat," and "mat" because they follow the same pattern.

Common Word Patterns You Will Learn

You will practice many different spelling patterns. The "-at" pattern includes words like cat, bat, hat, and rat. The "-ig" pattern has words like big, dig, and pig.

Other patterns you will discover include "-un" words like sun, run, and fun. You will also learn "-am" words like ham, jam, and yam. Each pattern helps you spell more words!

Key Terms & Definitions

Spelling Pattern: A group of letters that appears at the end of words and makes the same sound, like "-at" in cat, bat, and hat.

Word Family: A group of words that share the same spelling pattern and rhyme with each other.

Rhyme: When words sound alike at the end, like "big" and "pig" or "sun" and "run."

Word Ending: The last part of a word that often contains the spelling pattern you use to read and spell.

How You Will Practice

You will sort words into groups that have the same patterns. You might put "hot," "pot," and "got" together because they all end with "-ot." This helps you see how patterns work.

You will also complete words by adding letters to patterns. If you see "_at," you can add "c" to make "cat" or "b" to make "bat." This practice makes spelling easier!
