Solve Exponential Equations

Learn the two core strategies for solving exponential equations, matching bases and applying logarithms, with worked examples that show every step.

What You'll Learn

An exponential equation has the variable in the exponent, such as two to the power of x equals eight.
If both sides can be rewritten with the same base, set the exponents equal and solve the resulting equation.
When the bases cannot be matched, take a logarithm of both sides and use the power rule to bring the exponent down.
Always check that any value substituted back into the original equation actually satisfies it.
Natural log or common log both work for solving exponential equations, as long as you apply the same log to both sides.
