Mental Math Word Problems

This lesson shows how to read a word problem, pick out the important numbers, and solve it without paper using mental math strategies such as counting on, making ten, and rounding. Clear steps and worked examples build number sense and speed.

What Are Mental Math Word Problems?

A mental math word problem is a short story about numbers that you solve completely in your head, without using paper, a calculator, or your fingers. The tricky part is not the math itself, it is figuring out what the story is actually asking. Once you turn the words into a number sentence, like \( 8 + 5 \) or \( 15 - 6 \), you can use the same fast mental strategies you already know from adding up to 20 and subtracting up to 20.

Every word problem has two important parts: the numbers, and the action word that tells you what to do with them. Words like "in all," "together," or "more" usually mean addition. Words like "left," "fewer," or "gave away" usually mean subtraction.

Example: "Mia has 8 stickers. Her friend gives her 5 more. How many stickers does Mia have now?" The numbers are 8 and 5. The word "more" tells you this is an addition problem: \( 8 + 5 = ? \)

Once you know the number sentence, choose whichever strategy is fastest for those numbers.

Counting on works well when one number is small. Start at 8 and count up 5 more: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13.

Making ten works well when a number is close to 10. Break 5 into 2 and 3: \( 8 + 2 = 10 \), then \( 10 + 3 = 13 \). Both paths land on the same answer, \( 8 + 5 = 13 \).

After computing, check what the word problem asked for, because sometimes the number sentence needs one more step. Example: "Ben had 15 marbles. He gave 6 to his sister. How many marbles does Ben have left?" The word "left" signals subtraction: \( 15 - 6 = 9 \). Ben has 9 marbles left, and that number, with the word "marbles," is the complete answer.

"There are 9 red apples and 4 green apples in a basket. Someone eats 5 apples. How many apples are left in the basket?"

  • Step 1, find the total: \( 9 + 4 = 13 \) apples to start.
  • Step 2, subtract what was eaten: \( 13 - 5 = 8 \) apples left.

Notice how each part of the story becomes its own small number sentence you can solve in your head, one piece at a time.

Before solving, it helps to guess a reasonable answer, then compare your mental math result to that guess. If a problem uses larger numbers, rounding numbers to the nearest ten can give you a quick estimate. If your exact answer is far off from your estimate, that is a sign to reread the problem and check your steps.

  • Read the whole problem once before doing any math, so you understand the full story.
  • Underline or say out loud the numbers and the action words.
  • Choose the strategy that feels fastest for those specific numbers, not the same one every time.
  • Say the answer back in a full sentence to make sure it actually answers the question asked.
