Composing 2D Shapes
This lesson explains what it means to compose 2D shapes: putting simple flat shapes together, edge to edge, to build a new composite shape. It covers common shapes used in composing, walks through two worked examples, and offers practice ideas for exploring composite figures with pattern blocks.
Shapes You Can Combine
Most composing activities use a small set of familiar shapes:
- Triangles (shapes with 3 straight sides)
- Squares (4 equal sides, 4 right angles)
- Rectangles (4 sides, opposite sides equal, 4 right angles)
- Trapezoids (4 sides, only one pair of sides parallel)
- Hexagons (6 straight sides)
Each of these can be joined with copies of itself or with other shapes. The key rule is that the edges you join must line up so there are no gaps and no overlaps.
How to Compose a New Shape
Follow these steps whenever you compose a new shape from smaller pieces:
- Look at each smaller shape and count its sides and corners.
- Find two shapes that have a matching edge, the same length side that can touch.
- Slide the shapes together so the matching edges line up exactly.
- Look at the outline of the new, larger shape and name it if you can.
Worked Example: Building a Square from Two Triangles
Two right triangles that are exact copies of each other can be joined along their longest side (the hypotenuse) to compose a square. Notice how the outline of the combined figure has 4 equal sides and 4 right angles, so the new composite shape is a square.
Worked Example: Building a House Shape
Composite shapes do not have to be simple squares or rectangles. Joining a square with a triangle on top gives you an outline that looks like a house.
Notice that the new house shape has 5 sides in its outline, even though it was built from a 4-sided shape and a 3-sided shape. Composing shapes changes the outline, so it is worth tracing the whole outer edge of your new figure once the pieces are joined.
Composing Shapes Around You
Composite shapes show up everywhere once you start looking for them: a stop sign is close to an octagon built from cut corners, an envelope is a rectangle with a triangle flap, and many tile floors are made of repeated triangles and squares fitted together. Spotting these combinations is good practice for recognizing how simple shapes stack up into more complex ones.
Tips for Practicing
Hands-on practice makes this idea click faster than looking at pictures alone. Physical or digital pattern blocks let you slide shapes around until the edges match up exactly, and you can try more than one combination with the same pieces.
