To compare the width of two objects, line them up so their edges match, then look across each one. Whichever object stretches farther from side to side is the wide one. The one that stretches less from side to side is the narrow one.
Here is a simple picture of a wide path and a narrow path placed side by side. Notice how the wide path stretches farther across than the narrow path, even though both paths could be drawn the same length.
Example: Comparing Everyday Objects
Suppose a classroom has a big storybook and a thin notebook lying on a table. To decide which one is wider, place them next to each other so the bottom edges line up. Look at how far each book stretches across. The storybook, which stretches farther across, is the wide object. The notebook, which stretches less across, is the narrow object.
