Tall and Short: Comparing Height

What Does Tall and Short Mean?

When we talk about how far up something goes, we are talking about its height. In kindergarten math, the easiest way to describe height is with two simple words: tall and short. A tall object goes way up high, while a short object stays closer to the ground. A tree is tall, a flower next to it might be short. A grown-up is usually tall, and a baby is usually short.

Height is a kind of linear measurement, just like the ideas covered in lengths (long and short) and width (wide and narrow). All three describe the size of an object in a straight line direction, height goes up and down, length usually goes side to side, and width describes how far across something is.

To compare the height of two objects fairly, both objects need to start from the same flat surface, like a table or the floor. Once the bottoms line up, we simply look at which top reaches higher.

  • If one object's top is higher than the other, that object is taller.
  • If one object's top is lower than the other, that object is shorter.
  • If both tops line up exactly, the two objects are the same height.

Notice that both towers sit on the same line in the picture. If one object were placed higher up than the other, like on a shelf, the comparison would not be fair anymore, so lining up the bottoms is an important first step.

Sometimes we compare three or more objects at once. When that happens, we use extra words: tallest for the one that reaches the highest, and shortest for the one that stays lowest. Anything in between can still be described as taller than one object and shorter than another.

A helpful way to check the order is to sort the objects from shortest to tallest, moving from left to right. If every step gets a little higher than the one before it, the order is correct.

Before children learn to use a ruler, they can measure height using simple objects like blocks, paper clips, or cubes, stacking them from the floor up to the top of the object being measured. Counting how many objects it takes tells us about how tall something is compared to something else. This idea connects closely with measuring using objects, where the same stacking and counting strategy is used for other measurements too.

For example, if a toy dinosaur takes 5 stacked blocks to reach its head, but a toy car only takes 2 blocks to reach its roof, we know the dinosaur is taller than the car. This kind of hands on measuring helps build the idea that height can be described not just with words like tall and short, but also by counting units.

Try these simple checks at home or in the classroom:

  • Stand two toys next to each other on a table. Which one is taller? Which one is shorter?
  • Line up three family members' drawn heights on paper. Put them in order from shortest to tallest.
  • Stack blocks next to a chair leg and next to a table leg. Which stack needed more blocks?

These activities build a strong foundation for height, which is one part of the bigger picture of measurement alongside length and other comparisons kindergartners explore.
