Composing 2D Shapes

This kindergarten lesson introduces composing 2D shapes: joining two or more simple shapes, such as triangles, squares, and rectangles, edge to edge to build a new, larger shape or a picture. Students practice recognizing which shapes fit together and see how basic shapes are the building blocks for more complex ones.

What does it mean to compose 2D shapes?

Composing 2D shapes means putting two or more flat shapes together, side by side, to build a brand new shape. Think of it like puzzle pieces: when the edges line up perfectly, the smaller shapes join to form one bigger shape with no gaps and no overlaps.

Before composing shapes, it helps to already know how to name and select the 2D shape you are working with, since you need to recognize a triangle, square, or rectangle before you can combine them.

Two shapes can only join neatly if the sides that touch are the same length. A short side cannot line up with a long side without leaving a gap or a bump. This is why counting and comparing sides and corners is such a useful skill: it helps you predict which shapes will fit together before you even try.

Look at the two triangles below. Each one has a slanted side of the exact same length. When those two matching sides are pushed together, the triangles form a perfect square.

The same idea works with squares and rectangles. Two identical squares placed side by side, with their equal sides touching, compose a rectangle. The new rectangle is twice as wide as one square but exactly the same height.

Notice that the composed rectangle is not a totally new kind of shape to learn; it is simply the two squares put together. Seeing shapes this way helps students understand that basic shapes are building blocks for more complex ones.

Shapes can also combine to make recognizable pictures. A square and a triangle placed together, with the triangle sitting on top of the square, compose a simple house shape.

When you look at a picture made this way, try to spot the shapes hiding inside it. A boat might be made from a rectangle and a triangle sail; a robot might use a square body, a rectangle neck, and circle buttons. Naming the shapes inside a picture is great practice for composing shapes in reverse.

  • Line up equal sides first; matching side lengths is what lets shapes fit together with no gaps.
  • Look for the new shape's name once the pieces are joined, since two triangles or two squares often make a shape you already know.
  • Try turning a shape before joining it; rotating a triangle can change whether it fits with its neighbor.
  • Count how many smaller shapes were used to build the new shape or picture.

Composing shapes is closely connected to noticing balance and matching parts, which is exactly the idea behind symmetry: many composed shapes, like the square made from two triangles, have two halves that mirror each other.
