Basic Symmetry for Kindergarten

This kindergarten lesson introduces basic symmetry, showing children how to recognize matching halves in shapes and pictures. Kids learn to find a line of symmetry and tell symmetrical shapes apart from non-symmetrical ones using simple, visual examples.

What Is Symmetry?

Something is symmetrical when it can be split into two halves that look exactly alike, like two mirror images sitting side by side. If you could fold the shape right down the middle, both sides would land perfectly on top of each other. This idea of "matching halves" is the whole secret behind basic symmetry, and it shows up everywhere, from a butterfly's wings to a simple square.

Before diving into symmetry, it helps to already be comfortable naming shapes like circles, squares, and triangles. If shape names still feel new, it can help to review naming and selecting 2D shapes first, since every symmetry example starts with a shape.

The imaginary fold line that splits a shape into two matching halves is called the line of symmetry. Some shapes have this line running straight up and down, some have it running side to side, and some shapes, like a circle, have many lines of symmetry at once.

Look at the square below. The dashed line cuts it into a left half and a right half. Both halves are exactly the same size and shape, so the dashed line is a true line of symmetry.

Not every shape or picture has symmetry. A shape is only symmetrical if there is at least one place you could draw a fold line where both halves match perfectly. Compare the heart shape and the letter F below.

Noticing how many sides and corners a shape has can also help decide whether it looks the same on both sides of a fold. If comparing shapes this way feels tricky, it pairs well with practicing how to count and compare sides and corners.

A simple way to test symmetry is to cut a shape out of paper and fold it in half. If both sides line up exactly, with no part sticking out, the shape is symmetrical. If one side is bigger, longer, or shaped differently than the other, the shape is not symmetrical along that fold.

  • Fold a paper square corner to corner or side to side, both work.
  • Fold a paper heart straight down the middle.
  • Try folding the letter F in different places, no fold will ever match.

This same folding trick works with everyday pictures too, not just plain shapes. Try it out on real objects and drawings with the practice set on identifying pictures with symmetry.

Once you know what to look for, symmetry pops up in lots of everyday things: a butterfly's wings, a leaf, a snowflake, or even a smiling face. Practicing with simple shapes first makes it much easier to spot symmetry in these more detailed, real-world pictures.
