Converting Dot Grids to Numbers up to 100

This lesson shows how to read a dot grid, such as a ten frame or hundred grid, and turn it into the number it represents. Students learn to count complete rows of ten dots as tens and any remaining dots as ones, then combine the two to name numbers up to 100.

What Is a Dot Grid?

A dot grid is a picture made of dots arranged in neat rows, usually with ten dots in every row. Ten frames and hundred grids are the two dot grids you will see most often. Instead of counting every single dot one at a time, you can use the rows to see the number in groups of ten plus a few extra ones. This is much faster and helps you understand what a two‑digit number is really made of.

The Tens and Ones Method

Every dot grid up to 100 can be read the same way. First, count how many rows are completely full of ten dots. Each full row is one group of ten. Then look at the last row, the one that is not completely filled, and count how many dots are left over. Those leftover dots are the ones. Putting the two parts together gives you the number:

\( n = 10t + o \)

Here \(t\) stands for the number of full ten‑rows and \(o\) stands for the leftover dots. So if a grid has 3 full rows and 4 leftover dots, the number is \( 10 \times 3 + 4 = 34 \).

Worked Example: Reading a Dot Grid

3 full rows of ten dots, plus 4 dots in the last row.

Count the full rows first: 1 row, 2 rows, 3 rows, each worth ten, so that is \( 10, 20, 30 \). The last row only has 4 filled dots before the empty spaces start, so add 4 ones: \( 30 + 4 = 34 \). The dot grid shows the number 34.

Worked Example: A Larger Dot Grid

4 full rows of ten dots, plus 6 dots in the last row.

Skip count the full rows by tens: \( 10, 20, 30, 40 \). Then count the leftover dots by ones: \( 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46 \). So \( 40 + 6 = 46 \). This grid represents 46.

Dot Grids Near 100

Ten rows of ten cells. When every cell holds a dot, the grid always shows 100.

The biggest dot grid you will meet for numbers up to 100 is a ten by ten grid. If all ten rows are completely full, that is \( 10 \times 10 = 100 \). If even one dot is missing from the last row, the grid shows a number less than 100, such as 91 or 99. Once you can read these grids confidently, it helps to practice the reverse skill of finding missing values in a number grid up to 100 and counting values in a number grid up to 100, since both use the exact same tens and ones thinking.

Quick Tips for Converting Dot Grids to Numbers

  • Scan the grid row by row and count only the rows that are completely full.
  • Skip count those full rows by tens: 10, 20, 30, and so on, before touching the leftover dots.
  • Count the leftover dots one by one, starting from the last ten you said out loud.
  • Practicing the skip counting pattern in number sequences with 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 makes counting the full rows faster.
  • For a quick check on small grids, recount every dot individually to confirm your tens and ones answer matches.
