Common mistakes
- Natural hazards and natural disasters mean the same thing. → A hazard is the event itself; a disaster is the outcome when it harms people or property. An earthquake in an uninhabited area is a hazard but not a disaster.
- Technology can completely prevent natural hazards from occurring. → Adaptation measures reduce risk and damage but cannot stop hazards like earthquakes or hurricanes. Communities prepare for and respond to hazards; they do not control nature.
- Only poor countries face serious risks from natural hazards. → All regions face natural hazards; wealth affects preparedness and recovery, not hazard occurrence. Wealthy nations like Japan and the U.S. still suffer major losses from earthquakes, floods, and storms.
