Definition

People who provide important services that keep a community safe and running, such as firefighters, doctors, teachers, and sanitation workers. Learning about them shows how community members depend on one another.

Worked examples

Firefighters are community helpers who protect people and property from fires and emergencies.
A sanitation worker collects trash every week so garbage doesn't pile up in neighborhoods.
Sanitation workers keep the community clean and healthy by removing waste regularly.
A teacher helps students learn to read, write, and solve problems at school each day.
Teachers are community helpers who educate children and prepare them for the future.

Common mistakes

  • Only police officers and firefighters are community helpers. Many people are community helpers: doctors, librarians, postal workers, bus drivers, and more. Community helpers include anyone whose job provides a service the community depends on.
  • Community helpers only work when there is an emergency. Most community helpers work every day to keep things running smoothly. Teachers, mail carriers, and sanitation workers provide daily services, not just emergency response.
