Definition
The shared rules and laws that help people in a community live together safely and fairly, such as traffic rules and rules about sharing public spaces. Rules protect people and keep order.
Worked examples
A traffic light rule: Red means stop, yellow means slow down, green means go.
Traffic rules keep drivers and pedestrians safe by telling everyone what to do at the same time.
A park rule: No littering and clean up after your dog.
Public space rules ensure the park stays clean and pleasant for everyone who uses it.
Common mistakes
- Community rules are just suggestions people can ignore if they want. → Community rules are laws or regulations that everyone must follow. Rules have consequences if broken; they are enforceable to protect the community.
- Only police officers have to follow community rules. → All members of a community must follow the same rules. Rules apply equally to everyone to ensure fairness and order.
- Community rules only exist to punish people. → Community rules exist to protect people and help them live together peacefully. The main purpose is safety and fairness, not punishment.
