The era from the 15th to 17th centuries when European powers sailed to map and reach new parts of the world. It opened global trade routes and contact between continents but also began centuries of colonization and the exploitation of Indigenous peoples.

Common mistakes
- The Age of Exploration was only about discovering new lands. → It was driven by trade, wealth, religion, and competition among European powers. Explorers sought gold, spices, converts to Christianity, and national glory — not just geographical knowledge.
- Europeans discovered empty continents during this era. → They encountered lands already inhabited by Indigenous peoples with established societies. Millions lived in the Americas, Africa, and Asia before European contact; 'discovery' is a Eurocentric term.
- The Age of Exploration had only positive effects like increased trade. → It also brought colonization, slavery, disease, and exploitation of Indigenous populations. The era's legacy includes both global exchange and immense suffering for colonized peoples.
