Definition
The study of how the size and structure of a population change over time. Populations grow or shrink depending on births, deaths, and migration, and are limited by factors such as food, space, and predators.
Worked examples
A deer population of 100 has 20 births, 10 deaths, and 5 immigrants in one year, growing to 115.
Birth and immigration increase population size; death decreases it — the net change shows growth.
A bacterial colony doubles every hour until nutrients run out, then growth stops.
Populations grow rapidly when resources are abundant but stabilize when limiting factors take effect.
Common mistakes
- Population size only changes because of births and deaths → Migration (immigration and emigration) also changes population size The definition includes births, deaths, AND migration as drivers of population change.
- Populations always grow over time → Populations can grow, shrink, or stay stable depending on limiting factors Food, space, predators, and disease limit growth; populations can decline when deaths exceed births.
- Population structure only means the total number of individuals → Population structure includes age distribution, sex ratio, and other characteristics Structure refers to the makeup of the population, not just its size.
