Definition

Naturally occurring minerals that are extracted from the Earth and used by people, such as metal ores, salt, and gemstones. They are non-renewable on human timescales, so their use raises questions about conservation and sustainability.

Worked examples

Iron ore (hematite) is mined, smelted to extract pure iron, then used to manufacture steel for buildings and vehicles.
A metal ore is extracted and processed to obtain the useful element for industry.
Halite (rock salt) is mined from underground deposits and used for road de-icing, food preservation, and chemical production.
A mineral resource mined for its direct chemical properties rather than extracting a metal.
Diamonds are extracted from kimberlite pipes and used in jewelry and industrial cutting tools.
A gemstone mineral resource valued for both aesthetic and practical hardness properties.

Common mistakes

  • Mineral resources are renewable because new minerals form constantly.Mineral resources are non-renewable on human timescales. Mineral formation takes millions of years, far too slow to replace what we extract.
  • All rocks are mineral resources.Only minerals that are economically useful and extracted are mineral resources. A mineral becomes a resource only when it has value and can be mined profitably.
  • Recycling metals creates new mineral resources.Recycling reuses existing mineral resources but does not create new deposits. Recycling conserves resources by reducing the need for new extraction, but the original material still came from a deposit.
