Definition

Materials or methods that slow the transfer of heat, helping keep objects warm or cool. Insulators such as foam, wool, and air trap heat and reduce its flow, which is why they are used in clothing and buildings.

Worked examples

A winter coat filled with down feathers traps air in tiny pockets between the feathers.
The trapped air is a poor conductor, so it slows heat loss from your body to the cold outside air.
Fiberglass batts in an attic create a barrier of trapped air and glass fibers.
This slows heat flow from the warm house into the cold attic, reducing heating costs.

Common mistakes

  • Insulation generates heat to keep you warm.Insulation slows heat transfer; it does not produce heat. Your body or a heater provides the heat — insulation just stops it from escaping quickly.
  • Metals are good insulators because they feel cold.Metals are conductors; they feel cold because they quickly transfer heat away from your hand. Good insulators like foam or wool feel warmer to the touch because they transfer heat slowly.
  • Insulators stop all heat transfer completely.Insulators slow heat transfer but do not stop it entirely. Heat will still flow through an insulator over time, just much more slowly than through a conductor.
