Definition

The collection of fossils preserved in rock layers that provides physical evidence of life in the past. By studying the fossil record, scientists can trace how organisms have changed over millions of years and learn about species that are now extinct.

Worked examples

Trilobite fossils found in Cambrian rock layers (about 520 million years old) show segmented bodies and complex eyes.
These fossils tell us trilobites were diverse marine animals that later went extinct.
Horse ancestor fossils in successive rock layers show a gradual increase in body size and changes in toe structure over 55 million years.
The fossil record reveals how horses evolved from small, multi-toed animals to larger, single-hoofed ones.

Common mistakes

  • The fossil record shows every organism that ever lived.The fossil record is incomplete — only a small fraction of organisms became fossils. Fossilization is rare; soft-bodied organisms and those in certain environments rarely fossilize.
  • Older fossils are always found in upper rock layers.Older fossils are typically in deeper (lower) rock layers. Rock layers stack over time, so deeper layers are usually older unless disturbed by geological events.
  • Gaps in the fossil record mean evolution didn't happen.Gaps reflect incomplete preservation, not absence of evolutionary change. Many transitional forms exist; others weren't preserved due to conditions unfavorable for fossilization.
