Definition
The practices that prevent injury and damage when working with electricity, such as avoiding water near outlets, not overloading circuits, and using insulation and fuses. These measures guard against electric shock and fire.
Worked examples
A student unplugs a toaster by pulling the cord instead of grasping the plug, and the cord frays, exposing bare wire.
Always pull the plug itself to avoid damaging insulation and creating a shock hazard.
Before changing a light bulb, switch off the fixture at the wall and confirm the power is off.
Cutting power first prevents accidental contact with live wires during maintenance.
Using a power strip rated \(15\,\)A\(\) to run devices totaling \(20\,\)A\(\) causes overheating and potential fire.
Overloading a circuit exceeds its safe current limit and generates dangerous heat.
Common mistakes
- Using electrical devices with wet hands or near water because "it's only a little moisture" → Keep all electrical devices and outlets away from water and dry your hands first Water conducts electricity and dramatically increases the risk of severe or fatal electric shock.
- Plugging multiple high-power appliances into one outlet using adapters → Spread high-power devices across different circuits and check the outlet's amp rating Overloading one outlet can overheat wiring inside the wall and start a fire.
- Ignoring a frayed or damaged power cord because the device still works → Replace or repair any cord with exposed wire immediately Damaged insulation exposes live conductors that can shock you or ignite nearby materials.
