Definition
The parts that make up an electric circuit, such as a cell or battery (energy source), wires (conductors), switches (to control flow), and devices like bulbs or motors that use the electrical energy.
Worked examples
A simple circuit: battery (energy source) → wire → switch → bulb → wire back to battery
Each component has a role: the battery pushes current, wires carry it, the switch controls flow, and the bulb uses energy.
A circuit with a motor: cell → wire → motor (spins) → wire → cell
The motor is a different device component that converts electrical energy into motion instead of light.
Common mistakes
- thinking the battery stores current that gets used up → the battery provides energy; the current flows continuously in a closed loop Current is a flow, not a substance. The battery pushes charges around the circuit repeatedly.
- calling any wire a 'circuit component' → wires are conductors that connect components; they don't transform or control energy themselves Components have specific jobs (source, control, use); wires just provide a path.
- assuming all circuits must have a switch → a switch is optional; the circuit works without one if you want continuous flow Switches are convenient for control but not required for a complete circuit.
