Definition
The different kinds of cells, such as plant and animal cells, or the specialised cells of the body like nerve, muscle, and blood cells. Cells differ in shape and structure according to the functions they perform.
Worked examples
A red blood cell is disc-shaped and lacks a nucleus, maximizing space for oxygen transport.
Shape and structure match function — the flat disc increases surface area for gas exchange.
A nerve cell has long extensions called axons to carry electrical signals over distance.
The elongated structure allows rapid communication between distant parts of the body.
Plant cells have a rigid cell wall and chloroplasts; animal cells have neither.
These structural differences reflect the different needs of plants (support, photosynthesis) versus animals.
Common mistakes
- All cells in the body look identical and do the same job → Cells are specialized — nerve, muscle, blood, and other cells have distinct shapes and functions Specialization allows multicellular organisms to perform complex tasks efficiently.
- Plant cells and animal cells are the same except for size → Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts, and a large vacuole that animal cells lack These structures support photosynthesis, rigidity, and storage unique to plants.
- A muscle cell and a skin cell contain different DNA → All cells in an organism share the same DNA but express different genes Cell type is determined by which genes are turned on, not by different DNA.
