Definition
All the possible values specified within the highest and lowest number of a set. It is calculated by subtracting the highest value with the lowest value. In algebra, range refers to the Y - values on a graph, expression or function.
Worked examples
\(\)Data: \( 3, 7, 12, 5, 9 \quad \)Range\( = 12 - 3 = 9\)
Find the highest and lowest values in the set, then subtract lowest from highest.
\(f(x) = x^2 \) has range \( [0, \infty)\)
In algebra, range means all possible y-values; this parabola never goes below zero.
Common mistakes
- \(\)Range\( = \)highest\( + \)lowest\(\) → \(\)Range\( = \)highest\( - \)lowest\(\) Range is the difference between extremes, not their sum.
- \(\)Data: \( 2, 5, 5, 8 \quad \)Range\( = 5\) → \(\)Range\( = 8 - 2 = 6\) Use the actual highest and lowest values in the set, ignoring repeats.
- confusing range (y-values) with domain (x-values) on a graph → range is the vertical span; domain is horizontal Range captures all output values; domain captures all input values.
