Definition
An alphabetical character in mathematics that can take on different number values. It also can mean a quantity that is subject to change or can be regarded as different quantities.
Worked examples
\(x + 5 = 12\)
Here \(x\) is the variable — it can be solved to find that \(x = 7\).
\(A = \pi r^2\)
\(A\) and \(r\) are both variables; as the radius changes, the area changes too.
\(3a + 2b - 4c\)
This expression has three variables: \(a\), \(b\), and \(c\), each holding a different value.
Common mistakes
- \(5x\) means \(5\) and \(x\) are separate → \(5x\) means \(5 \times x\) A number written next to a variable means multiplication, not addition.
- \(x\) always equals \(x\)-axis or the number 10 → \(x\) is a placeholder that can represent any number Variables have no fixed value until defined by an equation or context.
- You can only use \(x\) as a variable → Any letter can be a variable: \(a\), \(b\), \(y\), \(t\), etc. Choose letters that make sense for the problem — \(t\) for time, \(d\) for distance, and so on.
