4th Grade Math Topics in Wyoming

Wyoming's 4th grade math curriculum is built around the Wyoming Mathematics Standards. Students work through 28 major topic areas covering operations, number sense, fractions, measurement, and geometry. StudyPug organizes every topic into easy-to-follow video lessons so students can find exactly what they need.

Multiplication and Division

4th graders learn to interpret multiplication equations as comparisons and solve word problems using multiplicative reasoning. They multiply up to four-digit numbers by a one-digit number and multiply two two-digit numbers. Division with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors is also introduced, including remainders.

Number Sense and Place Value

Students explore how digits in a multi-digit number represent ten times the value of the digit to their right. They read and write large numbers in base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Rounding multi-digit whole numbers to any place and fluently adding and subtracting using the standard algorithm are key skills at this grade.

  • Recognize place value relationships across digits
  • Read and write numbers in multiple forms
  • Round numbers and estimate sums and differences
  • Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers

Fractions and Decimals

4th grade introduces equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with unlike numerators and denominators, and understanding fractions as sums of unit fractions. Students multiply a fraction by a whole number and connect fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 to decimal notation. Comparing decimals to the hundredths place rounds out this section.

Measurement and Data

Students solve real-world problems involving distance, time, volume, mass, and money using all four operations. They apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles and create line plots to display measurement data in fractions of a unit.

Geometry

4th graders draw and identify points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles. They measure angles with a protractor, recognize angle measure as additive, and classify two-dimensional figures by their sides and angles. Lines of symmetry are introduced as a key geometric concept.

  • Identify and draw right, acute, and obtuse angles
  • Measure angles in whole-number degrees
  • Classify shapes by parallel and perpendicular lines
  • Recognize lines of symmetry in two-dimensional figures
