1st Grade Math Topics in Washington
Washington 1st grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students work on addition and subtraction within 20, including solving word problems and understanding the relationship between addition and subtraction. They also learn to add three whole numbers and apply properties of operations to make adding and subtracting easier.
Place Value and Number Sense
A big part of 1st grade math in Washington is understanding place value. Students learn that a two-digit number is made up of tens and ones, count to 120 starting from any number, and compare two-digit numbers using the symbols >, =, and <. They also practice adding within 100 and mentally finding 10 more or 10 less than a number.
Measurement, Time, and Data
Washington 1st graders develop early measurement skills by ordering objects by length and expressing length in whole number units. They tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks, and learn to organize and interpret data in up to three categories.
Geometry
