Pennsylvania 4th Grade ELA: What Students Learn

In 4th grade, Pennsylvania students dive deeper into reading and writing skills that form the foundation for all future learning. Aligned to Pennsylvania Core Standards in ELA, the curriculum focuses on analyzing literary and informational texts, developing clear written arguments, and expanding vocabulary and grammar knowledge.

Reading Comprehension in 4th Grade ELA

Pennsylvania 4th graders are expected to read closely and explain what a text says directly as well as what can be inferred. Students compare fiction and nonfiction, identify main ideas, and describe how events, concepts, and characters develop across a text. StudyPug's lessons break these skills into clear steps with worked examples and practice exercises.

Writing Skills for 4th Grade

4th grade writing in Pennsylvania covers opinion pieces, informative essays, and narrative writing. Students learn to introduce a topic clearly, support ideas with details, and write conclusions. Grammar and conventions — including correct punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure — are also part of the 4th grade ELA standards.

Vocabulary and Language Development

Pennsylvania Core Standards expect 4th graders to use context clues, roots, and affixes to determine word meanings. Students also practice using reference materials and learn figurative language such as metaphors and similes. StudyPug provides guided practice on all vocabulary and language skills tested in Pennsylvania.

Preparing for the PSSA ELA Test

Pennsylvania students in 4th grade take the PSSA (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment) in ELA. The test assesses reading comprehension and writing skills aligned to Pennsylvania Core Standards. Practicing with StudyPug helps students feel confident heading into test day because every lesson maps directly to what the PSSA covers.
