Pennsylvania 3rd Grade ELA — What Students Learn

In 3rd grade, Pennsylvania students make a big shift in their English learning. Reading moves from learning to decode words to understanding and analyzing what they read. Students work on identifying the main idea, understanding characters, comparing texts, and building their vocabulary. Writing skills grow too — students practice organizing their thoughts, writing complete paragraphs, and using correct grammar and punctuation.

All of these skills are covered by Pennsylvania Core Standards in English Language Arts, which guide what 3rd grade teachers across the state are expected to teach. StudyPug's lessons follow these standards so your child is always practicing what matters most in school.

Reading Comprehension in 3rd Grade

Reading comprehension is a major focus in 3rd grade ELA. Students learn to:

  • Identify the main idea and key details in a passage
  • Ask and answer questions about what they read
  • Understand the difference between fiction and nonfiction texts
  • Describe characters, settings, and events in stories
  • Use context clues to figure out unfamiliar words

StudyPug provides guided practice for all of these skills. Each lesson walks students through examples step by step, and practice problems give them a chance to apply what they've learned right away.

Writing and Grammar Skills

3rd grade is also when students start developing more structured writing habits. Pennsylvania Core Standards expect students to write opinion pieces, informational texts, and simple narratives. Grammar skills at this level include:

  • Using nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs correctly
  • Writing complete sentences and avoiding run-ons
  • Using correct capitalization and punctuation
  • Spelling grade-appropriate words

StudyPug breaks each of these grammar and writing topics into short, clear lessons with worked examples. Students can practice at their own pace until they feel confident.

Preparing for the Pennsylvania PSSA

Pennsylvania 3rd graders take the PSSA (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment) in English Language Arts. The test covers reading comprehension, vocabulary, and written expression — all skills that StudyPug's 3rd grade ELA lessons address directly. Using StudyPug throughout the school year helps students stay on track with class and build the skills they'll need when PSSA testing arrives.
