1st Grade Math Topics in Oklahoma

Oklahoma 1st grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that set students up for success in later grades. From adding and subtracting within 20 to understanding place value and reading analog clocks, every topic in the Oklahoma Academic Standards Math is designed to build number sense and problem-solving skills.

Addition and Subtraction in 1st Grade

First graders in Oklahoma learn to solve word problems using addition and subtraction within 20. They practice adding three whole numbers, apply properties of operations, and develop fluency with facts within 10. Understanding the relationship between addition and subtraction — including finding unknown numbers in equations — is a key focus at this grade level.

Place Value and Counting

Oklahoma 1st graders learn that two-digit numbers are made up of tens and ones. They count to 120, compare two-digit numbers using the symbols >, =, and <, and practice adding within 100. Students also learn to find 10 more or 10 less than a number mentally and subtract multiples of 10.

Measurement, Time, and Data

Students measure length by expressing it as a whole number of units, order three objects by length, and tell time in hours and half-hours on both analog and digital clocks. They also organize and interpret data sorted into up to three categories.

Geometry in 1st Grade

First grade geometry introduces defining versus non-defining attributes of shapes. Students compose two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes to create composite shapes, and partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares.
