About 1st Grade New Mexico math

New Mexico follows the New Mexico Standards for mathematics, built around operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry. In 1st grade, students develop addition and subtraction fluency within 20, build place value understanding with two-digit numbers, measure lengths, tell time, and work with 2D and 3D shapes.   • Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Using addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems, adding three whole numbers, applying properties of operations, understanding subtraction as an unknown-addend problem, and relating counting to addition and subtraction.
  • Number and Operations in Base Ten: Counting to 120 from any starting number, understanding tens and ones in two-digit numbers, comparing two-digit numbers with the symbols >, =, and <, adding within 100, and finding 10 more or 10 less mentally.
  • Measurement and Data: Ordering objects by length, expressing length in whole units, telling and writing time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks, and organizing and interpreting data with up to three categories.
  • Geometry: Distinguishing defining from non-defining attributes of shapes, composing two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, and partitioning circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares.
