1st Grade Math Topics in North Carolina
North Carolina's Standard Course of Study Math for 1st grade covers five main areas: operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry. StudyPug has a video lesson and practice set for every topic in this list.
Addition and Subtraction
First graders in North Carolina learn to add and subtract within 20. This includes solving word problems, adding three whole numbers, understanding the relationship between addition and subtraction, and achieving fluency within 10. StudyPug walks through each of these skills with clear examples and guided practice.
Place Value and Number Sense
Students learn to count to 120, understand tens and ones in two-digit numbers, and compare numbers using >, =, and <. They also practice adding within 100 and mentally finding 10 more or 10 less than a number. These skills prepare students for 2nd grade math.
Measurement and Data
North Carolina 1st graders order objects by length, express length in whole units, and tell time to the hour and half-hour using both analog and digital clocks. They also organize and interpret data across up to three categories.
Geometry
Students distinguish defining from non-defining shape attributes, compose two- and three-dimensional shapes, and partition circles and rectangles into equal shares. StudyPug covers each geometry standard with visual lessons your child can follow along with easily.
