Missouri 1st Grade Math: What Your Child Will Learn

First grade math in Missouri covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students practice addition and subtraction within 20, learn to solve word problems with three whole numbers, and develop fluency with basic facts. These skills align directly to Missouri Learning Standards Math and set the stage for 2nd grade math success.

Place Value and Number Sense

Missouri 1st graders learn that every two-digit number is made up of tens and ones. They count to 120, compare two-digit numbers using >, =, and < symbols, and practice adding within 100. They also learn to mentally find 10 more or 10 less than any two-digit number without counting.

Measurement, Time, and Data

Students order objects by length, express lengths in whole units, and tell time to the hour and half-hour using both analog and digital clocks. They also organize and interpret data sorted into up to three categories.

Geometry

  • Identify defining and non-defining attributes of shapes
  • Build and draw shapes with specific attributes
