Kentucky 1st Grade Math: What Students Learn
Kentucky 1st grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that students need for future success. Following the Kentucky Academic Standards for Math, students in 1st grade develop fluency with addition and subtraction, build understanding of place value, and explore measurement, data, and geometry.
Addition and Subtraction Within 20
A major focus of 1st grade math is solving word problems using addition and subtraction within 20. Kentucky students learn to add three whole numbers, apply properties of operations, and understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. They also build fluency for addition and subtraction facts within 10.
- Solve word problems using addition and subtraction within 20
- Add three whole numbers with sums up to 20
- Understand and use properties of operations as strategies
- Relate counting to addition and subtraction
Place Value and Two-Digit Numbers
1st graders in Kentucky learn that two-digit numbers are made of tens and ones. They count to 120, compare two-digit numbers using >, =, and < symbols, and practice adding within 100. Students also learn to mentally find 10 more or 10 less than any two-digit number.
- Count to 120 starting from any number
- Understand tens and ones in two-digit numbers
- Compare two-digit numbers with >, =, and <
- Add within 100, including two-digit and one-digit numbers
- Subtract multiples of 10 from multiples of 10
Measurement, Time, and Data
Kentucky 1st graders begin measuring length by ordering objects and expressing length in whole units. They tell and write time in hours and half-hours using both analog and digital clocks. Students also organize and interpret data sorted into up to three categories.
Geometry
In geometry, 1st graders distinguish defining attributes of shapes from non-defining attributes. They build and draw shapes, compose two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes into composite shapes, and partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares.
StudyPug covers every one of these 1st grade math topics with video lessons and practice problems. Each lesson is designed to match what Kentucky teachers are covering in class.
