Indiana 1st Grade Math Topics

Indiana's 1st grade math curriculum covers a wide range of foundational skills. Students work on addition and subtraction within 20, including solving word problems and adding three whole numbers. They explore properties of operations, understand the relationship between addition and subtraction, and build fluency for facts within 10.

Place Value and Two-Digit Numbers

1st graders in Indiana learn that two-digit numbers are made of tens and ones. They count to 120, compare two-digit numbers using the symbols >, =, and <, and practice adding within 100. Students also learn to mentally find 10 more or 10 less than any two-digit number and subtract multiples of 10.

Measurement and Data

Indiana 1st grade math introduces measurement concepts including ordering objects by length and expressing length in whole number units. Students also learn to tell and write time in hours and half-hours using both analog and digital clocks, and they organize and interpret data with up to three categories.
