Illinois 2nd Grade ELA: What Students Learn

In 2nd grade, Illinois students make significant strides in English Language Arts. They move from learning to read to reading to learn. Key skills include phonics and word decoding, reading fluency, story comprehension, vocabulary development, and writing in complete sentences and short paragraphs. All of these skills are grounded in the Illinois Learning Standards for ELA.

Reading Skills in 2nd Grade ELA

Illinois 2nd graders strengthen their ability to read grade-level texts with accuracy and understanding. Students practice identifying the main idea, retelling stories, understanding character and setting, and comparing texts. Strong reading skills at this stage set the foundation for success in 3rd grade and beyond, including the IAR assessment that begins in Grade 3.

Writing Skills in 2nd Grade ELA

2nd grade writing in Illinois focuses on forming complete sentences, using correct punctuation and capitalization, and organizing ideas into short paragraphs. Students also begin opinion writing, informational writing, and simple narrative writing — all aligned to Illinois Learning Standards.
