Idaho 3rd Grade ELA: What Students Learn

In 3rd grade, Idaho students make a major shift from learning to read to reading to learn. Under the Idaho Content Standards for ELA, students develop reading comprehension skills across literary and informational texts, strengthen their grammar and language conventions, and begin producing organized written work including opinion, narrative, and informational pieces.

Reading Comprehension in 3rd Grade

Idaho 3rd graders learn to identify story structure, describe characters and their motivations, determine the main idea of informational texts, and explain how key details support that main idea. Students also practice reading fluency so they can focus their attention on understanding meaning rather than decoding individual words.

  • Story elements: character, setting, plot, and theme
  • Main idea and supporting details in nonfiction texts
  • Text features: headings, captions, glossaries, and diagrams
  • Comparing and contrasting two texts on the same topic

Writing Skills for Idaho 3rd Graders

3rd grade writing in Idaho focuses on organizing ideas clearly across opinion, informational, and narrative writing. Students learn how to introduce a topic, provide supporting details or reasons, and write a conclusion. They also practice revising and editing their own work.

  • Opinion writing: state a point of view and give supporting reasons
  • Informational writing: introduce and develop a topic with facts
  • Narrative writing: develop a real or imagined experience with a clear sequence
  • Editing for grammar, punctuation, and spelling

Grammar and Language Conventions

Idaho 3rd grade ELA includes focused grammar instruction. Students practice using nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs correctly. They also work on capitalization, punctuation, and spelling patterns to make their writing clearer and more accurate.

Vocabulary Development

Students in Idaho's 3rd grade expand their vocabulary by learning to use context clues, prefixes, suffixes, and root words to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words. They also build academic vocabulary through exposure to grade-level texts across subjects.
