4th Grade Math Topics in Georgia

Georgia 4th grade math is guided by the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE). Students this year tackle a wide range of concepts — from multi-digit multiplication and division to fractions, decimals, measurement, and geometry. StudyPug covers every one of these topics with clear video lessons and practice problems.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Students learn to interpret multiplication equations as comparisons and solve word problems involving multiplicative comparisons. They work through multistep word problems using all four operations, find factor pairs for whole numbers up to 100, and generate number and shape patterns that follow given rules.

Number and Operations in Base Ten

4th graders explore how digits in a multi-digit number represent ten times the value of the same digit one place to its right. They read, write, and round multi-digit whole numbers, and fluently add and subtract using the standard algorithm. Multiplication of up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers and division with up to four-digit dividends are also key skills at this level.

Fractions and Decimals

A large portion of 4th grade math focuses on fractions. Students explain equivalent fractions, compare fractions with different numerators and denominators, understand fractions as sums of unit fractions, and multiply fractions by whole numbers. They also connect fractions to decimals — expressing fractions with denominators of 10 or 100 using decimal notation and comparing decimals to the hundredths place.

Measurement and Data

Students solve real-world problems involving distances, time, liquid volumes, masses, and money using all four operations. They apply area and perimeter formulas for rectangles and create line plots to display data sets that include fractional measurements.

Geometry

4th grade geometry introduces angles as shapes formed by two rays sharing an endpoint. Students measure angles with a protractor, sketch angles of specified measures, and understand that angle measure is additive. They draw and identify points, lines, line segments, rays, and types of angles. Students also classify two-dimensional figures by their properties — including parallel lines, perpendicular lines, and angle sizes — and identify lines of symmetry.

Georgia Milestones and 4th Grade Math

Georgia 4th graders take the Georgia Milestones Assessment, which tests skills aligned directly to the Georgia Standards of Excellence. StudyPug's lessons and practice problems are organized by GSE standard, making it straightforward for students to review exactly what they need before test day.
