Georgia 1st Grade Math: What Students Learn

Georgia 1st grade math covers a wide range of foundational skills that students will rely on throughout elementary school. Aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence, the curriculum focuses on five key areas: operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry.

Addition and Subtraction Within 20

A major focus of 1st grade math in Georgia is building fluency with addition and subtraction. Students learn to:

  • Solve word problems using addition and subtraction within 20
  • Add three whole numbers whose sum is 20 or less
  • Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract
  • Relate counting to addition and subtraction
  • Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem

StudyPug's video lessons walk through each of these skills step by step, so students can watch, pause, and replay until the concept clicks.

Place Value and Two-Digit Numbers

Georgia 1st graders also develop a strong understanding of place value. Key skills include:

  • Understanding that the two digits of a two-digit number represent tens and ones
  • Counting to 120 starting at any number
  • Comparing two-digit numbers using >, =, and <
  • Adding within 100, including two-digit and one-digit numbers
  • Finding 10 more or 10 less than a number mentally
  • Subtracting multiples of 10 from multiples of 10

Measurement, Data, and Time

Students in 1st grade begin measuring length, reading clocks, and working with data. They learn to order objects by length, express length in whole units, tell time to the hour and half-hour using analog and digital clocks, and organize data into up to three categories.

Geometry

1st grade geometry focuses on shapes and equal shares. Students distinguish defining attributes from non-defining ones, compose two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, and partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares — laying the groundwork for fractions in later grades.
