Georgia Kindergarten Math: What Your Child Will Learn

Kindergarten math in Georgia is all about building the foundations your child will rely on throughout their entire school career. Aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE), the Kindergarten math curriculum covers five major areas: counting and cardinality, operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry.

Counting and Cardinality

Students learn to count to 100 by ones and by tens, count forward from any given number, and write numbers from 0 to 20. They connect counting to cardinality — understanding that the last number said when counting a group tells you how many objects are in that group. They also compare groups of objects to determine which is greater than, less than, or equal to another, and compare written numerals between 1 and 10.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Kindergarteners are introduced to addition and subtraction using objects, fingers, drawings, and verbal explanations. They solve word problems and add and subtract within 10. They also decompose numbers up to 10 into pairs in more than one way, find the number that makes 10 when added to a given number, and build fluency adding and subtracting within 5.

Number and Operations in Base Ten

Students begin to understand place value by composing and decomposing numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some additional ones. This sets the stage for understanding the base-ten number system in later grades.

Measurement and Data

  • Describe measurable attributes of objects such as length and weight
  • Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common
  • Classify objects into categories and count the number of objects in each category

Geometry

Students identify and describe shapes in their environment, correctly name shapes regardless of orientation or size, and distinguish between two-dimensional (flat) and three-dimensional (solid) shapes. They analyze and compare shapes using informal language and practice composing simple shapes to form larger shapes.

How StudyPug Supports Georgia Kindergarten Math
